What is Chili Crisp?
If you’ve ever found yourself wondering, “What is chili crisp?” you’re not alone. This question pops up frequently, and for a good reason. Chili crisp is a delicious and versatile condiment that can elevate just about any dish with its unique blend of spices and textures. But what exactly makes it so special? Let’s dive into the origins, ingredients, and flavor profile of this beloved condiment, and how I’ve made it my own here at Spice Witch.
The Origins of Chili Crisp
Chili crisp has its roots in Chinese cuisine, where it has been a staple for many years. Originally, it was a way to preserve chili peppers and add flavor to a variety of dishes. Over time, this condiment has evolved, with each region and even each family creating their own unique version. The core concept remains the same: a crunchy, spicy, and aromatic condiment that adds depth and complexity to food.
A Global Sensation
Today, chili crisp is no longer just a Chinese condiment; it has become a global sensation. Food enthusiasts around the world have embraced its unique flavor and versatility, incorporating it into a wide range of cuisines. From pasta and pizza to tacos and burgers, chili crisp is now a beloved addition to dishes far beyond its original borders.
The Ingredients
The magic of chili crisp lies in its ingredients. Traditional chili crisp includes a base of chili peppers, garlic, and onions, which are fried until crispy. The crispiness comes from the perfect balance of oil and dry ingredients, creating a texture that is both crunchy and satisfying.
At Spice Witch, I’ve put my own spin on this classic. I’ve always been a fan of complex, layered spice flavors that focus on flavor rather than overwhelming heat. That’s why my chili crisp is not too spicy but packed with flavor. Here are some key ingredients that make our chili crisp unique:
- Chili Peppers: Carefully selected to provide just the right amount of heat and flavor.
- Garlic and Onions: Fried to a perfect crisp, adding a sweet and savory depth.
- Avocado Oil: Unlike traditional chili crisps that often use seed oils, I use avocado oil for its rich flavor and health benefits.
- Aromatic Spices: A blend of spices that add complexity and intrigue to every bite.
The Flavor Profile
The beauty of chili crisp lies in its multifaceted flavor profile. It’s not just about heat; it’s about creating a symphony of flavors that dance on your palate. Here’s what you can expect from a spoonful of Spice Witch Chili Crisp:
- Crunchy Texture: The crispy garlic and onion pieces provide a satisfying crunch with every bite.
- Umami Richness: The combination of fried spices and aromatics delivers a deep umami flavor that enhances any dish.
- Balanced Heat: Just the right amount of chili peppers to give a gentle warmth without overpowering your taste buds.
- Complex Layers: Each ingredient brings its own unique note, creating a layered experience that keeps you coming back for more.
Making It My Own
Creating my version of chili crisp was a labor of love. I wanted to develop a product that not only honored the traditional roots of this condiment but also brought something new to the table. By using avocado oil and focusing on a balanced, flavorful profile, I believe I’ve achieved just that.
Whether you’re adding it to your morning eggs, mixing it into noodles, or using it as a finishing touch on roasted vegetables, Spice Witch Chili Crisp is all about enhancing your food with a burst of flavor and crunch. It’s a testament to the fact that good food doesn’t have to be complicated—it just needs the right ingredients and a little bit of magic.
So next time someone asks, “What is chili crisp?” you’ll not only know the answer but also have a new favorite way to add a spell of flavor to your dishes.
Happy cooking, and don’t forget to spice on!

Our everyday jar — chili crisp made with avocado oil instead of seed oils, layered with garlic, ginger, shallots and a warm spice blend. Balanced heat, real crunch, no canola or soybean oil. Small-batch and made in Asheville, NC.
What is Original Chili Crisp?
Original Chili Crisp is the everyday jar — the balanced one you reach for without thinking. It is a chili crisp made with avocado oil instead of seed oils, so there is no canola or soybean oil in the jar. Onto that clean base we layer garlic, ginger, shallots and a warm spice blend for depth that goes well past heat. It is layered, crunchy, and built on real ingredients. If you have seen this style of condiment called chili crunch, this is the same thing — a spoonable, crunchy chili condiment you can cook with or finish with.
Why avocado oil instead of seed oils
Most chili crisps lean on seed oils. Ours starts with avocado oil for a cleaner, more neutral base — no seed oils, ever, which means no canola and no soybean oil. The result is no funky aftertaste and no fillers, just flavor that tastes like something.
- Avocado-oil base — no canola, no soybean oil
- No fillers, no funky aftertaste
- Small batch, made in Asheville, NC
- Balanced heat — warmth and depth, not just burn
What it tastes like
Balanced and warming rather than punishing. The garlic, ginger and shallots build a savory foundation, and the warm spice blend adds depth so the heat lands as flavor, not just fire. Crunchy texture in every spoonful.
Ways to use it
There is no wrong way to use Original Chili Crisp — cook with it or finish with it, both work.
- Spoon it over a bowl of plain white rice and dinner's done
- Stir it into mayo for a standout sandwich spread
- Fold it through scrambled eggs
- Drag a dumpling through it
- Spoon it over a fried-egg-and-avocado situation
How it compares to our other chili crisps
Original is the balanced everyday jar. If you want a darker, savory profile, reach for Black Garlic; if you want sweet-and-spicy, reach for Spicy Honey.
